Open The Bottle - Dragon's Milk Origin Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey
Here's something from a company I'd certainly heard of because I love their Dragon's Milk Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout beer. It makes sense that if you're good at fermentation, you could be good at making whiskey and that plays out with this bourbon. It's just good from start to finish. According to Dragon's Milk, the Origin bourbon has a high rye content and a high malted barley content in the mash. Their tasting notes mention fruit a lot but we'd been drinking on it for about 45 minutes before we picked any fruit up. What we did get was a beautiful herbal mint on the finish along with vanilla on the nose and a lovely, viscous mouthfeel. Lots of rye and malted barley to go with the corn (it is bourbon after all) AND distilled in a prohibition-era pot still AND a 5-year age statement AND a respectable 95 proof AND a suggested retail price of $45 AND it is delicious. Sometimes something different is something very good and this is one of those times. I'm having a hard time finding anything I don't like about this given those details. We'll drink on it for a while and go 'Back to the Bottle' soon and let you know if it holds up or gets better or if it was just the live stream magic mist that had us so excited. For now, though, buy this bottle if you see it. If you're a high-rye bourbon drinker or a Kentucky-style rye whiskey drinker, this will be right up your alley plus some.
Cheers!
